Anderson, Gertrude Roe Anderson “Trudy” October 22, 1916 – November 22, 2008. Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother peacefully passed away at Granite Falls Manor on Saturday, November 22. She now joins her husband, “Bror,” daughter Susan and great-grandson, Tommy, in heaven. Born October 22, 1916 in Northfield, MN, to Herman and Anna Sophia (Kirkeberg) Roe. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Anna Sophia died in the 1918 flu epidemic. Herman then married Adelaide (Hjertaas) who was the mother Trudy remembered best. Trudy graduated Valedictorian from Northfield High school and entered St. Olaf College. She majored in Music and English and was also a member of the St. Olaf Choir where she met her future husband, Waldemar “Bror” Anderson from Cottonwood, MN. Adelaide died during her junior year at college. Her father later married Ella (Hjertaas). After college she taught piano and voice at Berea College in Kentucky and at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. After her marriage to Bror in 1941, they moved to Cottonwood, MN, where they raised 5 children. Her life centered on family, church and community. Her kitchen was a happy place filled with food and conversation. She was the choir director at Christ Lutheran Church and taught piano and voice for many years. She was active in women’s church groups, bridge club, P.E.O. and golfing. Trudy provided loving support to Bror in his role as President of North Star Mutual Insurance Company. They enjoyed many travels together until his death in 1973. Trudy was the loving hub of her young growing families. Her eldest child, Susan, died in 1995 and her great-grandson, Tommy, passed away in 2002. Even though she suffered many losses in her life, she had a radiant spirit and a strong faith in God. Trudy made everyone feel loved and special. She filled her days with daily devotions, classical music and knitting with a cat at her side. She followed her favorite sports teams and opera, sometimes at the same time. As a lover of nature she looked for the return of the martins each spring, and as a student of astronomy would often go outside at night and observe the stars and the planets. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ellenor Stroebel and Borgny Ostby; and a brother, Kirk Roe. She is survived by her sister, Anna Kay (Harold) Hofstad, sons, Kirk (Sheri Brown), Eric; daughters, Eldri (Michael) Wittkamper and Gudrun (Geoffrey) Witrak; grandchildren, Betsy (Tom) Pfeifer, Ann (Max) Heitzmann, Sarah Pepin, Nathan (Kelly Boone) Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Alex Anderson, Austin (Allison) Voit, Aaron (Jackie Gaston) Wittkamper, Becca (Steve) Ostrum, Laura Witrak (Tim) Belcastro, Andrew Witrak, Peter Witrak and Siri (Billy) Boyd; and great-grandchildren Natalie and Ella Pfeifer, Libby and Max Heitzmann. Blessed be her memory. Thanks be to God! Funeral service 1 PM Saturday, Nov. 29th at Christ Lutheran Church, Cottonwood, MN with interment to follow – Christ Lutheran Cemetery.
