Tyler, Marilyn Elizabeth Barnett
Friday, January 30th, 2009
Marilyn Elizabeth Barnett Tyler, 84, of Plymouth, Minnesota, succumbed peacefully to COPD early on January 30. Warm-hearted, smart, funny, plucky, inspiring mother of Jane (Tim) of Maple Grove, Katharine Tyler (Eugenia Smith) of Minneapolis, and William Tyler of St. Paul. Beloved spouse of Tracy F. Tyler, Jr. Also survived by a beloved granddaughter and by cousin and lifelong chum John Laurens of Orlando, Fla. Preceded in death by adored mother, Elsie Smith Barnett, and father, Benjamin Morris Barnett, of Minneapolis, and brother Robert W. “Bud” Barnett of Edina. Marilyn grew up in South Minneapolis and all her life retained especially happy memories of her childhood home on Vincent Avenue near Lake Harriet. Her mother was a professional pianist and organist and her father a violinist and popular orchestra leader at venues from Minneapolis’s Orpheum Theater to the State Fair. After graduating from Washburn High School, Marilyn attended the University of Minnesota, earning a B.A. in psychology and business. She was proud all her life of the trails she blazed in a short career in the business world, as a personnel manager for the L.S. Donaldson Company and director of the Community Chest’s Volunteer Service Bureau (a United Way forerunner). Marilyn relished reading good novels, tending her unruly flower garden, going on elderhostel adventures with Tracy, and sitting down at the piano to play and sing wide-ranging repertoire. A born storyteller, she never lost her dramatic flair or her avid interest in people. To the end of her life, she was a bright and generous spirit who drew others to her and who cared deeply about injustice and the unfortunate. Thanks to all at Cornerstone Assisted Living, Methodist Hospital and Hospice, and Hillcrest Care Center for loving care. Memorials preferred to St. Joan of Arc’s social justice and pastoral ministry programs, Minneapolis. Private Service and interment at Fort Snelling Cemetery, Minneapolis.
